The FARO-AMP 3D Imager highlights FARO
Technologies, Inc.'s recent release of their new 3D
imaging product line. The FARO AMP is a high
performance non-contact 3D imaging system, capable
of collecting millions of points in just seconds.
Using patented technology, the AMP achieves
groundbreaking accuracy on parts, assemblies and
tools never before possible.
The AMP is ideal for parts with complex shapes or
large, smooth surfaces due to its ability to measure
a large surface area in one shot. With the click of
a button, it captures the complete, detailed image
of the object within its half-meter field of view.
The AMP is the perfect tool for applications in
quality control, reverse engineering, and rapid
manufacturing.
“We are excited to make this new technology
available as a part of our portable measurement and
imaging solutions,” stated Jay Freeland, FARO Chief
Executive Officer. “But what’s even more exciting is
to be able to offer customers a truly affordable,
easy-to-use solution for capturing comprehensive
data on their parts and tooling. The AMP is an
advanced 3D imaging solution that allows us to
continue helping customers embrace the types of
technology that can make their products and
processes more efficient.”
The AMP also offers improved measurement of dark
and shiny parts that are often missed by optical
systems, and with its portable, rugged, and
thermally-stable design, it is right at home on the
shop floor or the assembly line.
The key to achieving high accuracy is the AMP’s
advanced technology: Accordion Fringe Interferometry
(AFI). “AFI uses lasers to generate infinitely
focused fringe patterns that are projected onto the
part,” said Chuck Pfeffer, FARO Director of Product
Management – 3D Imaging. “When the fringes are
captured with the AMP’s high resolution camera, a
highly accurate point cloud is created, generating a
true representation of the object. It is the
accuracy of these fringes that sets the AMP apart.”

Sandvik Coromant has announced the introduction
of its CoroMill 325 thread whirling inserts and
holders, available as of October 1st. These tools
address the growing demand for techniques that
produce threads fast and at high tolerances, arising
from the special thread forms used for medical bone
screws, implants and other micro components.
Thread whirling is a fast and accurate way to
thread long, slender components in
difficult-to-machine materials. By combining the
speed of thread whirling with the rigidity of a
sliding head machine, complete threads are produced
accurately in a single pass, without the need for
special supports.
CoroMill 325 thread whirling inserts and holders
can produce a wide range of high precision screws
and implants from rough stock at high speeds and fit
a large number of sliding head machine types. For
many manufacturers, this can eliminate the need for
a dedicated thread whirling machine.
Thread whirling provides a number of advantages
over traditional single-point threading, including
increased productivity, faster set up times, no
extra costs for finishing treatment, superior chip
control and increased tool life over conventional
tools.

Helical Solutions has introduced the H40ALV and
H40ALV-RN, representing a major expansion of its
aluminum end mill series. The new end mills are
robust additions to the Helical lineup and include
intricate geometry additions for an “ultimate”
non-ferrous machining solution.
This new H40ALV line includes a variable-pitch
flute configuration and cutting-diameter tolerances
that are among the tightest in the industry (-.0001
to -.0004). This precision delivers reduced chatter,
fewer tool offset adjustments and optimum tool
performance.
Customers testing H40ALV prototypes report
improved finishes and quieter operation.
Previously offered as a premium customization,
the line now includes a full corner radius option
ranging from .015-.250 as standard product. The
corner radii allows customers to accommodate finish
part requirements, offers improved part finish and
superior corner protection. Additionally, tool life
expectancy for the H40ALV line should show a
significant increase.
Also contributing to improved finishes are the
H40ALV’s wiper flats. Helical’s wiper design
burnishes the part floor without creating too much
tool pressure/friction.
Responding to customer requests for a more
“opened up end geometry” due to the industry trend
toward ramping and plunging in aluminum, the new
H40ALV line includes new end geometry. “We have
re-designed the geometry in order to accommodate all
three teeth cutting the center, allowing for maximum
chip clearance and evacuation while plunging and
ramping,” says Scott Tiehen, Helical’s national
sales manager.
The updated line of end mills is crafted of
certified premium sub-micron grain carbide and
available in stub, regular and reduced-neck lengths.
A ZrN (Zirconium Nitride) coating that provides
improved lubricity for maximum chip evacuation and
resistance to abrasion for extended tool life is
standard.
The H40ALV-RN is similar in design and function
to the H40ALV. The difference is that this tool has
a reduced neck diameter with a relatively short
flute length, allowing for longer reach into deep
pockets while maintaining maximum tool rigidity,
particularly useful for high-speed milling in
pockets.
Both the H40ALV and the H40ALV-RN are available
in shank diameters ranging from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.
Special configurations can be manufactured within 10
days.
